Tall and athletic, Stanton was a player of immense skill and refinement, his elegant, measured distribution and immaculate control enabled him to make a monumental contribution to the team for 13 seasons. He was Captain of the 1972 League Cup winning side, the club's first serious honour in 20 years and first major Cup in 70 years. It was Niddrie's greatest ever performance for Hibernian. Centre-forward Alan Gordon later recalled: "I never saw a display like Pat Stanton put on that day. It was his Cup Final completely - he dominated everything."
